NHS Orthodontics

NHS treatment is available to children under the age of 18. We only accept NHS patients who have been referred by their general dentist via the current NHS referral process, your general dentist will be aware of how to make an NHS referral. Please ask your dentist to make our practice as the first preference so the referral will be directed to us.

Not all patients referred on the NHS will be eligible for NHS brace treatment. We adhere to strict guidelines laid down for us by the government (Department of Health) and can only treat the more severe cases on the NHS. Please click here for more information.

If you attend for a NHS orthodontic assessment and you are too mild we can discuss the alternative private options with you.

Fixed metal braces, often known as ‘train tracks’, are the most common type of orthodontic appliance used for children under the NHS. This traditional treatment option consists of brackets (small squares) attached to the front surface of your teeth, which are connected with very thin metal wires. These wires, known as archwires, apply gentle pressure to your teeth to help guide them into a straighter position.

We use high-quality metal braces on our NHS patients and achieve excellent results.

Technology has advanced in orthodontics and metal braces are now smaller and more compact than ever before, making them more comfortable to wear.

Children often like to jazz them up and customise the braces with some colour. The tiny elastic bands used with each bracket to hold the wire in position come in a variety of colours. You can change the colour at your adjustment appointments. If you prefer your brace to look more discreet, you can opt for either the silver elastics.

Tooth coloured (aesthetic) or “invisible” braces are unfortunately not available on the NHS but we can offer more choice of brace e.g. clear less visible braces on a private basis, please talk to the specialist orthodontist on the day.

Functional/Orthopaedic Braces

The most common functional appliance we use is the Twin Block Appliance. It is a two part removable brace which is custom made by a laboratory from measurements that we make. The brace encourages the patient to posture their lower jaw forward. Typically these are used in growing patients to correct the bite of the back teeth at the same time as tucking back prominent front teeth. They can in many cases also bring about a beneficial improvement in the facial profile where the patient has a small lower jaw.
